On June 14, 2022, the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce will hold a hearing, Protecting America’s Consumers: Bipartisan Legislation to Strengthen Data Privacy and Security.
The bill at hand is H.R. 8152, the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA). That bill was introduced by U.S. Rep. U.S. Representatives Frank Pallone, Jr. D-N.J., with Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Janice D. Schakowsky (D-IL) and Rep. Gus M. Bilirakis (D-FL). Rep. Pallone and Rep. Rodgers are the chair and ranking member, respectively, of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee. Rep. Schakowsky and Rep. Bilirakis are the chair and ranking member, respectively, of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce.
On June 7, 2022, Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Subcommittee Chair Schakowsky issued a press release announcing the hearing. In advance of the hearing, committee staff released a committee memo and the committee’s minority staff released a Section by Section Summary of the bill as it was introduced. Also, there was a Memorandum from Chairman Pallone to the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce.
Also, on June 3, 2022, issued a press release announcing that U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS), the Ranking Member of the “Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and U.S. Representatives Frank Pallone, Jr. D-N.J., and Cathy McMorris Rodgers, [R-WA], Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce…released a discussion draft of a comprehensive national data privacy and data security framework. The draft legislation is the first comprehensive privacy proposal to gain bipartisan, bicameral support.”
